Canal Lodge

Canal Lodge has two flats in Burton on Trent with a shared kitchen. This accommodation is for individuals who have profound and severe needs relating to their diagnosis of Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Condition, and associated challenging behaviours that place themselves and others at risk.

The service will be tailored to:

Individuals with a learning disability and/or autism spectrum disorder. Who present with high levels of challenging behaviour. Whose challenging behaviour poses a significant risk to them, others, or property.

Key staff features of our service:

The support of a skilled staff team, 24-hour hours a day, specifically trained in positive behaviour management, autism, and challenging behaviour

A manager with extensive knowledge and experience in complex services, that will work closely with the PBS lead to ensure that PBS plans are developed throughout all stages, from initial assessments, transitions, and the day-to-day delivery of care within the bungalow, that allow the care team to deliver the highest levels of person-centred care.

Regular input and reviews with the wider care team and in-house PBS lead to review the presentations and agree on actions to help the care team in the delivery of care for each individual.

We recognise the importance of a Total Communication Environment. We implement this under the guidance and direction of our PBS Team who support our Supported Living services to implement service specific Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods. We work alongside Speech and Language Therapists to embed the strategies advised for individual service users, as well as adopting a Total Communication approach for the service as a whole.

A Total Communication approach focuses on using a combination of communication methods for each person. We accept all forms of communication and offer training to our staff to help them adapt their own communication methods in order for them to meet the needs of the people they are supporting. Godfrey Care works towards the principles of the 5 Good Communication Standards, set out by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). Some of the methods we use are:

Key home features of the service:

  • Two flats are designed to provide a low stimulus environment to keep the individual and staff team safe while ensuring a warm and comfortable homely feel.
  • Each flat will have its own living room, Bedroom, En-suite, Dining room, shared Kitchen and Garden
  • The building has been designed so that all aspects, including fixtures and fittings, risk of damage or self-injurious behaviours, are mitigated based on the needs of the living space.

What are the key outcome aims of this service?

  • A reduction in the severity, frequency and duration of behaviours that challenge to increase and improve resident's quality of life.
  • Decreasing distress for individuals, teaching functional skills to communicate their needs,and learning new coping skills for behavioural patterns.
